Genesis Unveils Flagship Electric SUV GV90 with Hidden B-Pillars and Multiple Industry Firsts

The all-electric GV90 will compete directly with rivals such as the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV and Cadillac Escalade IQ, and its top-tier Neolun version may even target Rolls-Royce and Bentley. The vehicle is based on the Neolun concept car unveiled by Genesis at a media event in New York in March 2024. According to the press release, it represents the culmination of Hyundai's advanced technologies.

The luxury SUV will be offered in two configurations: GV90 Neolun and GV90. Additionally, Genesis will launch a Neolun First Edition model with a four-seat layout to enhance the luxury passenger experience. According to Genesis, the First Edition will feature 24-inch wheels finished in the same color as the body to enhance the electric SUV's visual impact.

The "Neolun Arch Gate" design on the top-tier version allows the front and rear doors to open fully without the obstruction of a B-pillar, facilitating passenger entry and exit. The standard GV90, however, uses conventional hinged doors.

Advanced Aluminum Body Structure with High-Strength Steel

The GV90 features a new aluminum frame, which Genesis says improves body rigidity and reduces weight. Due to the removal of the traditional structural B-pillar, engineers designed a new body structure to connect the doors to the body while maintaining the highest safety standards, according to the press release.

Replacing the B-pillar are high-strength dual steel beams to ensure rigidity. Engineers also integrated a hidden roll cage by thickening the cabin frame (1.5 times thicker than conventional vehicles). To further protect occupants in collisions, high-strength steel tubes and structural foam help reinforce the body structure. According to the press release, the GV90 achieves the same crash safety performance as vehicles with traditional B-pillars.

According to Genesis, the structural design connecting the doors to the body is also intended to disperse impact forces during a collision. The entire frame uses an energy-absorbing structure and is equipped with 12 airbags, including the world's first roof airbag.

The roof airbag is designed to provide better protection in severe rollover accidents. According to Genesis, in a rollover collision, it deploys rapidly to cover the entire panoramic glass roof, preventing occupants from being ejected and reducing injuries from contact with the roof.

Engineers also added ultra-high-strength steel to the sides of the body to enhance safety and better protect the battery in collisions. The design incorporates a "skid structure" in front of the battery pack, intended to guide the motor and subframe downward beneath the vehicle in a frontal collision, avoiding direct impact on the battery.

Battery Details

The 123.5 kWh high-voltage battery pack is also the largest ever in a Hyundai electric vehicle. A wireless battery management system maximizes cell packaging efficiency, providing additional capacity without increasing the size of the battery pack.

The GV90's battery system includes thermal runaway protection, thermally isolating each cell within the battery pack to mitigate potential battery fire risks.

According to the press release, when connected to a 350 kW fast charger, the battery charges from 10% to 80% in 22 minutes. Based on Hyundai's internal testing, the estimated driving range is approximately 310 miles.

Dual-Motor All-Wheel Drive Powertrain

The GV90's dual-motor combined system output is 657 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque. The SUV is Hyundai's first model equipped with dual electronic limited-slip differentials on both the front and rear motors, which distribute motor output based on driving conditions. During high-speed cornering, power is efficiently delivered to all four wheels to improve handling. The system also helps reduce wheel slip on snow, rain, or uneven surfaces, enhancing control under various driving conditions.

The GV90 also features an active rear-wheel steering system that can turn the rear wheels up to 5 degrees, which, according to Genesis, reduces the turning radius to the level of a midsize sedan. This feature also improves cornering stability at medium and high speeds.

The GV90 is equipped with multi-chamber air suspension on all four wheels to further enhance ride comfort. It uses air springs with adjustable stiffness, allowing the ride height to be adjusted based on road conditions. The system dynamically adjusts the damping force of each wheel, providing a softer response to absorb road impacts and increasing stiffness when needed to control significant body movements.

Interior Highlights

As Genesis's flagship SUV, the GV90's engineers focused on interior comfort for passengers. The SUV features acoustic glass on all windows, including the windshield, sunroof, and tailgate window.

To eliminate road noise and vibration transmitted through the body—a common issue in some near-silent electric vehicles—Genesis injects high-expansion sound-insulating filler into the cavities of the main structural frame. According to Genesis, the GV90's cabin also remains quiet through extensive use of enhanced sound-absorbing materials and modifications to the sealing structures of the hood and tailgate.

Engineers also added a "comfort partition" that separates the second-row seats from the luggage area, further reducing cabin noise from the luggage compartment.

The GV90's seats are wrapped in premium leather to maximize softness and comfort. Each individual seat features 15 air chambers and pulse vibration functions, providing a massage experience that surpasses previous Genesis models, according to the press release.

The GV90's dashboard features a 23.6-inch pop-up central OLED cinema display. During normal driving, the widescreen integrates the instrument cluster, navigation, and media functions. When the vehicle is parked, the GV90 has a display expansion feature that raises the screen by 90 mm, revealing a slightly larger 24.6-inch viewing area for multimedia content.

Instead of a separate instrument cluster, the GV90 provides the driver with a 25-inch head-up display showing speed, navigation prompts, and driver assistance features.

The GV90 also features Hyundai's next-generation infotainment platform, Pleos Connect, built on the Android Automotive operating system. Users can download third-party vehicle apps from the Pleos app market and add them to the vehicle's infotainment system. The GV90 also comes with Hyundai's next-generation generative AI assistant, named Gleo AI.
