Land Rover issued a statement on August 14, planning to bring a road-legal version of its 2026 Dakar Rally-winning Defender D7X-R to market. The model was unveiled as a prototype at The Quail event during Monterey Car Week in California, with off-road performance configurations highly related to the race version. Land Rover stated that three D7X-R race cars finished first, second, and fourth in the new production class during the 14-day, 24,000-kilometer race.

This road-going race car will retain the D7x body architecture, transmission, and drivetrain of the D7X-R race car, which itself is based on the Defender OCTA. The limited-edition Defender Dakar model also features a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 gasoline engine, which, unrestricted by racing regulations, will unleash its full potential with 636 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of peak torque, along with an enhanced cooling system.

The Defender Dakar model will feature a 35-inch tire package with new forged 20-inch wheels, fitted with all-terrain rubber, and a suspension system using coil springs paired with race-proven Bilstein Advanced dampers. In terms of off-road technology, the new vehicle adds Sand and Gravel driving modes, as well as a Flight mode developed for handling jumps, originally designed for the race version to ensure smooth landings.

Exterior details include roof light clusters, carbon fiber raised air intakes, a carbon fiber hood, widened wheel arches with exposed rivets, a tailgate cover, and signature mud flaps. Underbody protection is reinforced with a race-spec metal front skid plate. The Defender Dakar model offers multiple color options, including a Dakar Sand body with Yanbu Turquoise roof inspired by the D7X-R livery, an optional matte protective film, and Narvik Black and Alaska White choices.

Inside, the cabin features a 2+2 seating layout with specially designed racing seats up front, optional four-point racing harnesses, and rear storage space specifically designed to accommodate racing helmets. The cargo area will include specially designed mounting brackets for a spare tire and air compressor.

"This is the ultimate expression of the spirit of adventure and a true reflection of how we embrace the impossible," said Mark Cameron, Managing Director of Defender, in a statement. "This limited-edition model will showcase everything we have learned in some of the harshest environments and most competitive conditions."

Land Rover is currently assessing consumer interest in this limited-edition model, which is planned for global market launch in 2027. Additional media speculation regarding pricing and availability was denied by a Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson in an email to WardsAuto. "Details will be announced at the official 2027 Dakar launch," the spokesperson said. "We have not released specifications, pricing, or production numbers, and will announce them at launch."
